Who Repairs Icom 751a Repair

  1. I take a great sometime ICOM 751A whose main power switch is beginning to neglect. I called ICOM to see if there might exist a replacement available, or a electric current part that might fit. They said no, it was a "thirty-year-sometime radio"-- well, not really, I bought mine new in 1993. I bet the old Ten Tec would take had the part for a vintage like that. Anyway, the radio was 'manner alee of its time when it came out and I wouldn't want to toss it out over a bad power switch.

For at present, I've soaked the switch from the front, effectually the push stem, with DeoxIT. This has helped a lot but I assume the improvement is only temporary. Does anybody know where I could notice some sort of a replacement switch?

    Cheers and 73 DE N2OTG

  2. Contact Scott Malcom at MTS.
Scott worked at Icom when that radio was new, and has some difficult-to-notice Icom parts.

  3. This is a rig without a built-in power supply, right?

Then worse case scenario, wire across the power switch, and just turn the 12V ability supply on and off using its mains switch!

My two HF Transceivers are mains powered . . . but that's all I do with my 2m rig (given that I wouldn't leave the 12V PSU turned on anyway)

  4. A built-in switching PS was an choice but I did not society information technology as I figured information technology wasn't worth the trouble I'd heard about. Yes, I could curt the switch out and install a switch on the DC line, as I have some other things on the same supply. Improve than tossing the radio away, merely I hope I can replace the switch!

    Thanks for the proffer.

The Ability Switch (left edge of radio'south front console) is a push button.
I would have to pull-up the Service Transmission to call back the OEM role supplier.

    Department 5 has the pictorials.
    Folio five-3
The ability switch associates (S9, part # TW-0068) looks similar to the Switchcraft and
    C&Thousand (ITT/Schadow) "F-series" assemblies from 1970s and 1980s.

Likely just a matter of proper sizing for replacing this Japanese OEM Metric part.

    KA2TVX and AC0TX like this.
  6. Thanks a lot for the tips! I did contact Scott. He said that the trick was getting xx mm spacing with threaded holes. He didn't have any switches for sale but said they were basically reckoner-grade switches.

  8. The installed unit looks similar to these, long and thin. If yous're familiar with the rig, you'll know in that location is hardly a square inch (or should I say square mm) of wasted space. These await like they might fit! The holes don't seem to be threaded though. I will practice the search.

Thanks for taking the time and problem to wait!

  9. Shop around at old computer shops,
especially those with erstwhile ATX style computer cases (InWin, other Taiwanese mfg.),
someone will have that switch with threaded mounting subclass.

WATCH for Metric versus English hardware usage.
    IF Unknown ... USE NYLON machine screws (M3, M3.v, M4 / 4-forty, 6-32 SAE)
to verify thread size. Does not damage threads !!!

  10. Fry's has (or at least6 had) replacement switches for ATX and later on fashion computer power supplies. It's worth a try to see what they still have.
  11. The OLD TenTec would take had the part, and you could accept called and talked to a tech. The NEW TenTec won't have the role and you volition most certainly invoke their wrath if you try calling. It's called planned obsolescence. They sell more than new radios by making certain y'all can't prepare the former radios. The OLD TenTec was the exception to the rule. Yaesu, Icom, TenTec, Alinco and countless other companies all do the aforementioned thing now. A radio that is more than one-half dozen years quondam is now OBSOLETE. So what you exercise is pay four g for a replacement IC-7610. Welcome to the 21st century.
  12. It's why I would never buy a recent transceiver !

I want something I can repair myself, and go on going.

It'due south not merely the hardware that becomes un-available (switches etc) . . . most recent rigs utilise all kinds of specialised ICs and processors that are already obsolete !

    Roger G3YRO

  13. At that place is a 751A users group on Yahoo. Someone there tin give you some pointers.
  14. @G3YRO Yeah, exactly the reason I pass up to buy fancy auto tune amplifiers. I think I would non exist happy finding out a few years subsequently spending $7k or thereabouts that the control fries were no longer available...
  15. I take the same trouble. Did yous find a suitable replacement? Ray KD1CQ
  16. Hello Ray, no, not actually. It is working now that I've pumped some De-Oxit into the switch. I had to go through the forepart, removing the button and gently pressing the switch stem to one side and the other to allow the spray to enter. This was washed with the set up on its dorsum.

The play a joke on is to find a switch of the right dimensions and with threaded holes. I've never taken the front console off the rig but I bet that would exist no picnic either, judging by my experience with other rigs!

Good luck. Delight let me know if y'all find anything.
